In reference to California, Investigators are registered with the state specifically to locate and facilitate claims for their owners or heirs. They as well as their clients are paid from the state once a claim is successfully filed. Do not confuse "Investigators" with "Private Investigators".

Every case will differ in duration. Some cases may only take 3 months, while others may last up to a year. Factors that effect durations are liens, heirs who don't agree leading the case to go to probate, and dishonesty.
Not every lien holder is entitled to claim your proceeds. If the lien holder did not attach the lien to you (you would have received a notice from the court), then they are not entitled.
